Xtreme Xcitement Racing Association (X2RA) and Fontana Automotive have entered a marketing partnership for the 2006 Midget Season promoting Fontana’s new Rhino sealed motor program.

Each A-main feature event of the 2006 X2RA season will showcase the Fontana Dedicated Effort Bonus. This bonus will give $100 cash money to the A-main winner at the end of the night. To be eligible, the driver or car owner must be an X2RA member along with (2) prominent decal placements on each side of the car.

The key features of the Fontana Rhino sealed engine are 201-cubic inches with a 7500-rpm rev limiter. It has a 13:8 compression ratio utilizing a traditional Fontana aluminum block, steel valves, aluminum injectors, steel H-beam rods, needle-bearing rocker arms, and an MSD crank-trigger ignition. It is also light-weight at only 220-lbs with a Fontana REAP head, Barnes 3-stage oil pump, Hilborn fuel pump, and Olson aluminum oil pan.

The value doesn’t stop there…This motor is priced at only $18,500 FOB Gardena. And, it is only recommended to be freshened after (25) races – which in some cases can be TWO full racing seasons! Plus, any Rhino motor-refresh is approximately $3,500 regardless of the job’s extent. “Fontana’s Rhino midget engine is a bold solution to help stem midget engine costs without sacrificing performance,” says Don Lambert, X2RA’s President and Director of Competition. “This motor is also showing some very good torque numbers without sacrificing horsepower. And, since it’s sealed and non-alterable, it can last an entire season or more. Joe Fontana and his staff should really be commended for stepping up to the plate here in this very driver and owner-friendly motor. X2RA is always proud to work with folks like Fontana who is flat proving that it puts the racer first.”

The Fontana Rhino motor is beginning to gain wide-spread acceptance with other midget groups and teams. Along with X2RA, AMRA, ARDC, BMARA, MARA, POWRi, and RMMRA has approved it for competition for 2006. USAC West has also agreed to allow the Rhino motor in 2006 on a trial basis.

Strong interest has been coming from many teams competing with USAC West, POWRi, and ARDC. On the team front, Dave Ellis Race Cars from Phoenix, AZ plans to run a Fontana Rhino engine. David Gough plans to run a Fontana Rhino motor, too, at X2RA events in coordination with teammate David Ward of Royal Purple Racing out of Kankakee, IL. Other notable teams and drivers using Fontana power plants include Keith Kunz Motorsports (with drivers Jay Drake, Bryan Clauson, Darren Hagen, and Steve Kinser), Wally Pankratz Racing (with daughter, Randi Pankratz); Cruz Pedregon Racing (along with Chad Kemenah), Doug Starrett Racing (with Bryan Kobylarz and Billy Pauch, Jr.), Jerry Coons, Jr., Chris Rahe, Craig Carey, and Garrett Hansen.

Fontana Automotive was founded in 1988 and is located in Gardena, California. Today, it’s known as a leading designer and supplier of 4-cylinder and other engine parts worldwide. Dedicated to building better engines, racers from across the globe have all recognized Fontana’s innovation translating to lots of competitive success. Hey Grade 8 and all --

I just got off the phone with Joe Fontana. To answer your questions, the Fontana Rhino motor has:

>> A 4-inch stroke billet crankshaft
>> A billet camshaft
>> Imported and forged steel H-beam 4330-rods

Joe expounded on these rods a little bit:

-- He would have liked to use Carrillo rods; but, they are really the "Cadillac" in rods and more costly. He felt that these imported rods would be more than fine on this Rhino motor. With the 7500-rpm rev limiter, the critical stress measurements were considerably less. Plus, he also mentioned that the maximum G-Load measurements were quite a bit less, too, at 3503-G's.

--These rods are rough when received. Joe actually has Scat finish them initially; and, then, Fontana double-checks them again before installing them in the motor.

Hope this helps answer your question, Grade 8. E-mail me directly at Jimmy@X2RA.com with contact information if you're interested further. Or, you can call Joe Fontana directly at 310.538.2505.
