YOUNGSTERS NO MATCH FOR KUHN IN MIDGET MAIN EVENT
Added to the hugh field of sprint cars were 25 midgets, easily the largest field of the year. Brad Kuhn, ranked third in the USAC National midget series, showed his superiority with a drive from 14th to first.
Stevie Sussex beat Chris Edwards into the first turn and held the lead for the first three laps before yielding to 13 year old Chad Boat. The son of former Indy Car driver Billy Boat lead for four laps before he did an uncharacteristic spin, caught the berm and tipped over. The track went yellow and the crew uprighted the car and Boat rejoined the field at the rear of the pack.
Sussex, a 14 year old third generation driver, reclaimed the lead and was hoping for his second win of the year. His run was halted on the restart when Mike Schnakel made contact at the green flag, vaulted high in the air and did a couple of snap rolls and end over end flips. He managed to walk away from the crash.
Kuhn was on the move from his seventh row starting berth and reeled in the youngster with a USAC style slide job on the tenth lap. He kept the Westin Homes midget in front of the field for the win in the Westin Homes, Bender Brothers Custom Homes sponsored feature.
Sussex remained in second while Boat atoned for his earlier miscue with a drive that netted him a third place finish. Sprint car ace Charles Davis, Jr. drove his way from15th to finish fourth, just ahead of John Sarna. Rounding out the top ten were points leader Mike Welker, Darrin Bolton, Bugs Norbury, Paul Norbury and Mike Courtney.
Bolton, who is battling Boat for the second spot in the midget standings picked up some points with a win in the first heat race. The California driver started fourth in the first eight lapper on the one third mile track and beat Welker, Sussex, Connor Pullen and Jeremy Sherman.
Sarna came out of the third row to score his third heat race win of the year as he beat Dustin Burkhart, Edwards and Courtney in the second heat. The final heat went to rim riding Bugs Norbury who was better than Boat, Jeff Perry and Cole Houser.
U.S.W. Cat Construction, one of the major sponsors for the midget show, had two special Dash for Cash trophy runs. The first, a six lapper, was for rookies and Bolton took the win over Sussex, Boat, Jonathan Henry, C.J. Sarma and Schnakel. Bolton was also in the second dash which was a four lapper for drivers representing six states. Kuhn represented Indiana and took the win over Bolton (California), Pullen (Texas), Perry (Arizona). Butch Middleton (Colorado) and Michael Marfia (New Mexico)
