Another Carter added to Speedway lore

By Dave Lewandowski, indycar.com

Saturday May 21, 2005

That his Indy Racing League Menards Infiniti Pro Series rookie test was on the same day as his grandfather Duane’s induction into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall wasn’t lost on Cole Carter.

“It’s kind of a cool thing,” said Carter, 22, a Brownsburg, Ind. , resident. “I’d love to have been there for his induction, but on the other hand I know he’d be excited that I was getting my first taste of Indy-style racing. It’s kind of an ‘out with the old, in with the new’ kind of thing.

“I know he’d tell me to go have fun and do my best. I’m sure he’d be really proud of me and confident I could represent the Carter name well.”

Carter, who will make his Menards Infiniti Pro Series debut May 27 in the Futaba Freedom 100, will be the fourth person in his family to compete at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“Just being on the track; it’s got such a history especially with my whole family,” he said. “I’m just thankful for the opportunity and anxious to get out there.”

The private Menards Infiniti Pro Series rookie test at Kentucky Speedway on May 20 marked the first on-track appearance for the No. 77 Infiniti/Dallara/Firestone and American Revolution Racing.

“We were just looking to get some laps in before the Freedom 100,” said Carter, who finished fourth in the USAC National Midget Series in 2004. “Our goal was to simply pass the ROP and just start building a good on-track relationship with the whole team, and we were able to successfully do that.

“Obviously, I’m really excited. The people with ARR have given me a great opportunity to come into this series and show what I can do. I’m really looking forward to making the transition from USAC cars to the IRL cars and also running at IMS.”

Duane Carter had a high finish of fourth (1952) in 11 Indianapolis 500 starts. His son, Duane Jr. (“Pancho”), had a best finish of third (1982) among 17 starts and was the pole sitter in 1985. Stepson Johnny Parsons finished a best of fifth in 1977 and 1985. Another son, Dana, was bumped from the field in 1979. Cole Carter's maternal grandfather, carl Forberg, finished seventh in the 1951 500-Mile Race.

"My dad has been a tremendous influence,” Cole Carter said of Pancho. “Until now, he has always been my car owner and the guy who always had an answer to any type of situation that I would ask about. Stepping into these cars, I know he’ll be a huge help.

“I couldn’t ask for a better tutor at a place like IMS. He’s had so many laps there and knows it inside and out. The things he knows about this type of racing will really help the learning curve to the rear-engine cars.”

Pancho Carter, who lends analysis to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network during IndyCar Series race broadcasts, said he’s excited his son has received this opportunity to compete with American Revolution Racing.

“My goals for him are to run competitive and finish the race,” Pancho Carter said. “Obviously, I’d like to see him win, but more importantly I want to see him gain valuable experience.”

JAY DRAKE, COLE CARTER MAKE UP FREEDOM 100 SECOND ROW

Jay Drake of Val Verde, Calif. and Cole Carter of Brownsburg, Ind. will have the opportunity of a lifetime Friday when they roll their cars around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The two USAC standouts make up Row 2 of tomorrow’s Futaba “Freedom 100” IRL
Menards Infiniti Pro Series event at the 2.5-mile track in search of winning the top race on the IPS schedule.

Drake will drive the No. 20 Vision Racing Dallara/Infiniti, while Carter will pilot the No. 77 American Revolution Racing Dallara/Infiniti, both equipped with Firestone tires.

Drake already has racing experience at the track. The 2004 USAC Valvoline
National Sprint Car Series champion drove a steady race to finish fourth in
last year’s edition, and tested an Indycar at the track a few years before.
The Californian has teamed with Larry Curry – his sprint car team manager in
2004 – for a full slate in the Infiniti Pro Series race in 2005.

Drake said he wished he could have secured the pole but is content nonetheless.

“We keep getting better every time we go on the track, as it has been allyear,” Drake said. “Every time we are on the track it’s better than before, and that’s promising. Honestly, we wanted to be on the pole and win every race so anything less than that is a little disappointing but being here at the Speedway and having a great starting spot so it can make for a great race.”

Carter will be making his Infiniti Pro Series debut. He placed a series career best third in a USAC National Midget Car Series event May 7 at Beaver Dam, Wis. The Brownsburg, Ind. native is the youngest son of USAC “Triple Crown” winner and 1985 Indianapolis 500 polesitter Pancho Carter. Other members of his family to compete were Carl Forsberg, Duane Carter and Johnny Parsons.

“I’ve been staying pretty calm,” Carter said. “I’m just trying to take it all in, and I’m just doing what I can out there. We’re just going to try to stay out of trouble and stay at the front tomorrow.”

Carter hopes the Indianapolis experience isn’t his only racing adventure of the weekend. He is entered to drive a midget Saturday at Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Drake is pre-entered for Friday’s “Hoosier Hundred” Weld Racing Silver Crown
Series at the Indianapolis State Fairgrounds and Sunday’s National Sprint Car event at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio.

“It’s a lot of late nights and early mornings, and you forget to sleep sometimes, and that’s the hardest part,” Drake said. “But getting back and forth in the racecars, well, that’s what I love to do. If I could spend every moment I was awake in a racecar, I would do it. This is the closest time of the year that I get to do that.”
