I haven't seen a car come apart like that since Stan Fox's crash at Indy in '95.

Last i heard he was in serious condition , but awake and alert.

My prayers are with him and his family.

Wow! I agree with Marty, I haven't seen a wreck like that since Stan Fox in 1995. Kenny is extremely luck to be alive right now. Hopefully he can make a full recovery, but to just be alive after that crash is a miracle. That just goes to show how safe those cars really are.

:( I thought I heard rumors originally he was listed in "Serious" condition, but not "CRITICAL". I thought that was a good sign/report. And although he broke a lot of things, it looks like they are all recoverable.
I only heard about the accident, from a coworker watching the race and it was a serious crash.
I thought the car did what it's suppose to do. That is to tear appart and thus release all the energy. Making the final
impact less.
We use to hear about people breaking angles. And I have heard in the past they have worked to strenghthen the bulkhead around the legs/angles. Maybe it could be made a little stronger or better. I know a lot of people will be inspecting the car/remains and try to learn from it, trying to learn and make the cars safer and stonger.

Brack´s Surgery Is Very Successful on Sunday Night

For Immediate Release 1:30 p.m. (CDT) Oct. 13, 2003

KENNY BRACK’S SURGERY GOES WELL SUNDAY;
FEMUR, ANKLES REPAIRED IN DALLAS PROCEDURE

DALLAS, Texas.… Team Rahal’s Kenny Brack underwent successful surgery on his right femur and both ankles Sunday night (Oct. 12) at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, said Dr. Henry Bock, director of medical services for the Indy Racing League.

Dr. Brian Eastridge, a trauma surgeon, and Dr. Charles Reinert, an orthopedic surgeon, performed the surgery.

Brack, the 1999 Indy 500 champion, remains in serious, but stable condition and is awake and alert, Bock said.

Brack suffered a fractured right femur, a fractured sternum and lumbar and fractures to both ankles in an accident on lap 188 of the Chevy 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, the final race of the 2003 IndyCar Series season.

Further updates on Brack´s condition will be provided when available.

Brack’s team owner Bobby Rahal was able to talk to Kenny prior to Sunday surgery and Rahal, Brack’s wife Anita and several Team Rahal members talked to Dr. Reinert and Dr. Eastridge following the Sunday night procedure.

“We are very happy to see how Kenny was in such good condition after the surgery on Sunday,” said Rahal, the 1986 Indy 500 winner. “He came through with flying colors. The doctors are very optimistic. We are thankful for the great efforts of the doctors in the surgery and the IRL safety crew at the track. Thank goodness the Dallara chassis was so strong in that kind of crash. It has been so heartwarming for Anita and all of Team Rahal to receive so many calls of concern and for best wishes on Kenny’s condition. We thank everyone for their support.”

Brack medical update 2003-10-15
Racing series IRL
Date 2003-10-15

Doctors pleased with Brack's progress; Anita Brack talked to media Wednesday.

DALLAS, Texas.-- Team Rahal driver Kenny Brack continues to show improvement Wednesday (Oct. 15) at Parkland Memorial Hospital, said Dr. Henry Bock, director of medical services for the Indy Racing League.

Brack, the 1999 Indy 500 champion, remains in serious, but stable condition, Bock said.

Doctors from four departments - Neurosurgeons, Orthopedic surgeons, cardio specialists and the trauma team -- at Parkland Hospital observed and talked to Brack in the Intensive Car Unit Wednesday. All of the doctors and specialists were pleased with Brack's progress as he recovers from Sunday's horrifying crash at the Texas Motor Speedway.

Since the Chevy 500 incident, Brack has had two surgeries for his injuries including a fractured right femur, a fractured sternum and lumbar vertebrae and fractures to both ankles in an accident on lap 188 of the schedule 200-lap event, the final race of the 2003 IRL IndyCar Series season.

On Sunday night, Brack's ankles and right femur were repaired while, on Monday night, his L-3 vertebrae was fused to the L-2 and L-4 in an eight-hour procedure.

Brack's wife, Anita, met with the media Wednesday afternoon and described her feelings on the accident, her husband's injuries, his current condition and the future.

"We are having good news everyday," said Anita Brack. "That's has been very uplifting for myself, Kenny's friends and family and our Team Rahal crew. Sure, it has been tough for us after seeing Kenny in such an amazing crash. Of course, my first thought was to ask if he was still alive. But after a few minutes, I knew he was hurt but felt he could survive. When I was able to talk to him at the track care center, that was a big relief. He was joking with us at the hospital and talked to Michael (Andretti), Bryan (Herta), Dario (Franchitti) and Bobby (Rahal) before going into surgery Sunday night. I was more relieved then.

"I don't know if he will race again. That is up to Kenny. If he wants to race, I will be behind him. I love racing too. My instinct says he will want to race. But we know he has a long recovery period ahead. All of the C.T. scans show everything is good including his head. So I think he will be the same Kenny when he is well again. That's all I want right now."

Further updates on Brack's condition will be provided when available

Kenny Brack update 10/17/2003
Racing series IRL
Date 2003-10-17

Kenny Brack's condition improves; Team Rahal driver upgraded to satisfactory. IRL racer jokes with his wife and racing team Friday.

DALLAS, Texas. - Injured driver Kenny Brack's condition has been upgraded to satisfactory Friday at Parkland Hospital, said Dr. Henry Bock, medical director for the Indy Racing League.

Brack, driver of the No. 15 Pioneer/Miller Lite Honda Dallara, was injured in Sunday's Chevy 500 IRL IndyCar Series race at the Texas Motor Speedway.

Brack remains in the intensive care unit at Parkland Hospital with injuries that included a fractured right femur, a fractured sternum and lumbar vertebrae and fractures to both ankles. Brack had surgery on Sunday and Monday nights to repair the damage.

"Kenny was funny and telling us jokes today," said Anita Brack, Kenny's wife. "He was frustrated by many of the tubes in him after the surgeries. But he was back to being the same Kenny and giving the nurses and everyone a bad time. It was big lift for me to see him that way. Of course, he was typical Kenny and asking lots of questions - about the race, his injuries and the medical equipment. But I like that. It shows he is returning to his normal self."

Anita Brack said her husband was even telling jokes to his Team Rahal members.

"He told the team he would have the Texas race report next week for them," said a smiling Anita Brack. "He told them he was a little busy this week to work on it."

Brack is expected to remain at Parkland Hospital for several more days and will eventually be transferred to Indianapolis to begin rehabilitation for his injuries.

"Actually the doctors here have started Kenny working on moving his arms and legs," said Anita Brack. "So the rehab is beginning already. We are continuing to pray for Kenny's recovery and we hope the racing community and fans can do the same. We thank everyone for their support." he hospital's help this week."

Persons wishing to send a get-well message to Brack can do so at www.rahal.com or by sending cards or letters to:

Brack Transferred to Indy Hospital

DALLAS (AP) -- Kenny Brack was transferred Tuesday from a Dallas hospital to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he will begin rehabilitation for injuries sustained in a horrific crash in Texas.

Dr. Henry Bock, the Indy Racing League medical director, said Brack remains in satisfactory condition.

"I want to thank everyone for their support for (wife) Anita and I the last week," Brack said in a statement Tuesday. "I just didn't know how many friends, fans and racing enthusiasts were out there. It is great to know they are behind me, and I'm anxious to see everyone in the near future."

Brack had been in Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas since Oct. 12, the day the former IRL champion and Indianapolis 500 winner was injured during a crash in the series season finale
