In wishing all our Badger friends the best of luck on their return to indoor racing, we must all remember to thank the folks from the Badger State for being the ones who first had the idea of racing midgets indoors.

I've started to put together a list of all the indoor venues that have raced full midgets and I'll bet there are over 100 of them since that November day in 1934 when our forefathers took their/our sport under roof.

I found over a dozen in California alone! I can understand us folks in the frozen North craving some indoor racing, but California?

I think I have all the big venues and well known races, but anybody got some off the wall spots?

Obviously, you haven't lived in California, especially Northern California wink.gif Many years, it's too wet in Winter to run outdoors (except in the drought years!).

I'm interested in seeing the list. There have been some odd and unlikely indoor venues.

Are you using Allan Brown's Speedways book?

Off the top of my head, a lot of full Midgets indoors in Northern California - Oakland, Santa Rosa, San Jose, San Mateo. The BCRA had a good history of indoor racing. ARCO Arena I and ARCO Arena II in Sacramento and Selland Arena in Fresno had USAC Western States.

It's a state over, but I remember USAC Western States running indoors in a building at the Nevada State Fairgrounds in Reno on a dirt oval.

You asked for full Midgets but I know T.Q.'s ran indoors at the Forum in Inglewood, Anaheim Convention Center, Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino, El Monte Legion Hall, Bakersfield Civic Auditorium and Women's Auxiliary Building at Cal Expo in Sacramento.

I have been to N. Calif. Spent a few days looking at fog where they swear there is some famous bridge in San Fran. I really wanted to see Alcatraz, since it opened the same year as indoor racing began!

Allan's book is where I start all my searches, but I think we have some he doesn't in my files somewhere. If we do count mini-sprints and micros I think we will have way too many. They ran micros in Hawaii!

The list may not get done as quick as I would like. Despite cold, blowing snow here today, we will hit the track in just three weeks, so it will have to come together pretty quick, or wait for our off weeks.

Every project I start leads to another. My primary goal is to document the racing at Joliet Memorial Stadium. To do that, I wanted to see how our preceding club (UARA) came to race there. That led to the timeline I have going elsewhere on this board.

That timeline lead me to the most incredible 12 months in midget racing in the Chicago area. 82 race dates at 16 tracks (5 indoor) in 52 weeks - the first 52 weeks midgets raced in the Chicago area. So, of course, that leads me to find out how many indoor tracks I can find.

I don't know what tracks are on your list but I lived most of my life on Long Island and in New Jersey. These are the indoor tracks that I went to - Island Gardens in W. Hempstead, NY, Commack Arena in Commack, NY, Nassau Veterans Coliseum in Uniondale, NY, Atlantic City Convention Center in Atlantic City, NJ, and New Haven Veterans Coliseum in New Haven, Ct. There was also indoor racing at the Kingsbridge Armory in the Bronx, NYC, Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, NYC, & the Teaneck Arena in Teaneck, NJ.

Dwight, I was surprised how many I found in the tri-state region. The list is nearing completion, but it looks like there may be some intrusion on my time this week-end, what with family and all.

I don't remember seeing you out on Long Island when I was a kid swimming at Rocky Neck State Park in CT. I thought I saw somebody waving in 1953, was that you?

HaHa! Might have been! My parents used to take us to Sunken Meadow State Park where, on a clear day, Connecticut was clearly visible. Indoor racing was huge on L.I. The Islands Gardens ran weekly TQ's in the winter during the early 60's. They would have a nice crowd and a full pit area for each event. The drivers were a mix of ATQMRA TQ, ARDC midget, and L.I. modified drivers. It is where I first saw a young guy by the name of Mario Andretti race in 1962.

OK folks, here's what I have so far. The list shows the town, facility, and track length. After each state is the number of tracks I found in that state, and the running total of tracks so far. This list is only for tracks that ran (or still run) full midgets, not micros, 3/4's, TQ's, mini-sprints, mini-cups, sprint cars, stock cars, legends or dwarfs. Multiple listing should reflect a change in track length, surface, or new building. ?? indicates information unknown. Please feel free to make additions and corrections.

Thanks J.W.!

I've had a request to make this a North American list, so I will add the following Canadian tracks:
Skydome in Toronto,
Vancouver Pavilion,
Ottawa Auditorium,
unnamed location in Montreal.

Plus three more U.S. tracks:
Kingdom in Seattle,
Seattle Coliseum,
Freedom Hall in Louisville

Which bring the new total to 135

Do you have the University of Detroit Stadium on your list? The University stadium was locatd at Six Mile and Livernois in Detroit. The VFW sponsored midgets at both the Michigan State Fair Coliseum and at U-D in the 1930's. I have multiple programs from the 1935 season. The June 15th program, for instance, show may prominent Midwest and Pacific Coast drivers competing such as Curly Mills, Paul Russo, Johnny Wohlfeil, Howard Dauphin, Ronney Householder, Doc Shanebroook, and Roy Richter. Jimmy Snyder won the feature that night followed by Householder and Mills.

Please feel free to make additions and corrections.

Anaheim, CA, Anaheim Convention Center, ?? mile concrete oval
Chico, CA, The Pravilion, 1/10 mile concrete oval
Del Mar, CA, Del Mar Fairgrounds, 1/10 mile dirt oval
El Monte, CA, El Monte American Legion Stadium, 1/12 mile wood oval
Los Angeles, CA, Forum, 1/10 mile concrete oval
San Bernardino, CA,, Swing Auditorium, 1/10 mile concrete oval

Good list. I'm not aware of the above hosting anything other than micros (well, karts at Chico). And, I'll have to check again, but I believe the Del Mar site to be outdoors.

A couple of additions:

It gets confusing, but there were two different Arco Arenas. The basketball team used one as a temporary home and then a second one was built. So, two of them.

And the Nevada State Fairgrounds Livestock Arena (Reno, NV) had a USAC Western States Midget race sometime in the late 1980's-1990 range. It was listed as a 1/6 mile dirt indoor oval.

I have updated the list of indoor tracks above, making the additions and subtractions as suggested.

Additions are preceded by a + sign.

Subtractions are still shown (but not counted) with the strikethrough font.

Suggestions and corrections are welcome.

Not sure if you want to include it but Mini Sprints ran at Mototown USA in Windsor, CT from Jan.-April 2008. Some of the cars/drivers came from the Whip City Speedway in Westfield, MA, while others came to do some racing in the winter.
