Does anyone have any knowledge of the first ever usac indoor race at Ft. Wayne? Winner, line up? stories, etc.

Thanks. I know Shorty dominated 56-58 but I am pretty sure he did not win that first race.

It was held on Jan. 8, 1956 and was a 100 lapper won by Gene Hartley. I will look to see if I can find more info.

USAC has held a total of 60 events at the Allen Coliseum in Ft. Wayne. There have been years without a race there. The longest consecutive streak of years with at least one race was 25 from 1965 through 1989. Rich Vogler leads all winners with five. Bob McLean, Mel Kenyon, Gary Bettenhausen, Steve Lotshaw, and Steve Cannon each have three wins. Double winners are Chuck Weyant, Henry Pens, Lee Kunzman, Johnnie Parsons Jr., Bob Wente, Tom Bigelow, Sam Isenhower, and Tony Stewart. Twenty-four drivers have scored one win.

Add Rich Corson to the list. He also won 2 at Ft. Wayne, 2003 and 2005.

I heard the 1956 race was actually the very first USAC race, not just indoor.

Other than Mel Kenyon, anyone know how many active drivers ran the old "Hockey Rink" configuration?

It was the very first USAC race anywhere.

unsure.gif I believe a very young Dave Darland ran a 1200 mini sprint with the midgets in the old arena. I know that several fathers ran there like Jim Hines and Jim Elliott. Corson's dad owned cars then. It was a neat challenge before the pop syrup days. Hay bales used to line the infield rather than big axle eating tires.
